HCR-22 refrigerant is a new environmentally friendly hydrocarbon refrigerant used in energy conservation and emission reduction projects. It uses refined and high-purity.propaneMixed alkanes such as butane, butane, etc. are mixed through a certain weight ratio. They are deeply purified and accurately prepared without damaging the ozone layer, having no greenhouse effect, and are completely environmentally friendly.

Characteristics of HCR-22
1. affordable
By weight, the amount of HCR-22 snow seed is onlyR22, 40-55% of R502, so it is more economical.
2. high-efficiency energy-saving
The freezing point is low and the latent heat of evaporation is greater, which makes the cooling speed faster per unit time; the isentropic compression specific work is small, which makes the compressor work easier and extends the service life of the compressor; the molecular weight is small, the liquidity is good, and the conveying pressure is lower, reducing the load on the compressor. Using HCR-22 snow and HCR-22 snow hydrocarbon refrigerants can reduce system operating costs and reduce fuel consumption when the air conditioner is turned on, with an energy saving rate of up to 35%, reducing energy consumption.
3. Good refrigeration
The cooling capacity per unit volume and unit mass is greater. The heat exchange performance of the condenser and evaporator is improved. Therefore, HCR-22 energy-saving snow refrigeration has better cost performance.
4. High oil mixing rate
Compatible with all commonly used refrigeration lubricants (mineral lubricants, synthetic lubricants), non-toxic, and non-corrosive to metals and rubber. However, many refrigerants require specially equipped refrigerant lubricating oils. If used incorrectly, problems will arise. Using hydrocarbon energy-saving refrigerants can prevent problems caused by incompatibility between refrigerant and refrigerant lubricating oils. Currently used more on the marketR134aRefrigerants are corrosive and require extremely high rubber materials in refrigeration systems and are incompatible with commonly used lubricating oils. Therefore, when the original R12 refrigerant filled automobile air conditioner is replaced with R134a refrigerant, it must be modified, otherwise the compressor will be damaged and expensive. In most cases, no matter what type of car air conditioner and other refrigeration equipment need to be replaced with HCR-22 snow, no modification is needed.
5. Convenient filling
The air conditioning system and filling procedures do not need to be changed. Just follow the original filling procedures. However, it is recommended to use a digital scale to ensure accurate filling volume.
6. wide range of uses
Suitable for automotive air conditioners and refrigerators, household air conditioners, central air conditioners, refrigerated trucks and other refrigeration systems.

Alternatives & Matched Lubricant

Under the Kigali Amendment HFC phase-down, the following alternatives can be evaluated (R22 itself remains legal to use); the final selection must match the application, system pressure and lubricant compatibility.

Alternative refrigerants
R32, R410A, R407C, R454B or hydrocarbon R290
Matched lubricant
mineral oil (not interchangeable with POE used by R407C/R410A)

Regulatory and compliance status (R22 / Chlorodifluoromethane (HCFC-22)) — phase-out in progress

R22 (Chlorodifluoromethane (HCFC-22)) belongs to the hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFC), with an ODP of 0.055, and is a Class II controlled substance under the Montreal Protocol, currently subject to the global phase-out schedule. Developed countries halted production and import in 2020; developing countries (including China) are advancing according to the schedule, with servicing stock tightening year by year. The following are the regional status as of 2026.

EU

  • RegulationOzone-Depleting Substances Regulation (EC) 1005/2009
  • StatusVirgin HCFC no longer placed on the market
  • ServicingUse of reclaimed product permitted until 2030 (for some equipment types)
  • For R22No supply of virgin product; servicing must use reclaimed product and must be performed by certified personnel

US

  • RegulationClean Air Act Title VI + SNAP program
  • StatusProduction and import of virgin HCFC halted from 2020-01-01
  • Existing stockReclaimed product can be used for the maintenance of existing equipment
  • For R22Only reclaimed product available; supply and prices continue to tighten

China

  • RegulationRegulations on the Administration of Ozone-Depleting Substances (2024 revision) + National Phase-out Plan
  • Schedule67.5% baseline reduction by 2025, 97.5% by 2030, with only a minimal amount retained for servicing use after 2040
  • QuotaAnnual quota licensing for production and use, decreasing year by year
  • For R22Supplied within quota; procurement must be filed; servicing use given priority
  • Domestic procurement qualificationMust be filed in the “Ozone-Depleting Substances Information Management System”; suppliers must verify the filing

Japan

  • RegulationOzone Layer Protection Act + Act on Rational Use and Proper Management of Fluorocarbons
  • StatusHCFC is essentially abolished, with only reclaimed product in circulation
  • For R22No supply of virgin product; must be retrofitted or replaced
Other countries and regions (grouped by the Kigali Amendment)

Apart from the four columns of EU / US / China / Japan, the global 170+ Kigali parties all comply under the A5 (developing countries) / non-A5 (developed countries) groupings of the Montreal Protocol, and none impose equipment-level bans. The grouping determines the HFC reduction pace and is unrelated to geography — for example, the Middle East Gulf and India belong to A5 Group 2, while Brazil, Mexico and Chile belong to A5 Group 1 (same group as China). The table below is a quick reference for the groupings of major markets:

GroupingHFC reduction paceMajor countries / regions (representative)
A5 Group 1
(developing countries, including China)
2024 freeze → 10% reduction by 2029 → 30% by 2035 → 50% by 2040 → 80% by 2045Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Peru, Mexico, South Africa, South Korea, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, Egypt, Nigeria, etc. (about 140 countries in total)
A5 Group 2
(high-ambient-temperature group, HAT)
2028 freeze → 10% reduction by 2032 → 20% by 2037 → 30% by 2042 → 85% by 2047India, Bahrain, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates
Other non-A5
(developed countries, except EU/US/Japan)
85% reduction by 2036 / reduced to 15% by 2050Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Switzerland, Norway, United Kingdom, Russia* (first two steps delayed: 5% by 2020, 35% by 2025), etc.

For R22: a controlled substance in the phase-out process, with supply tightening year by year and prices rising. For the complete list of Parties and groupings, refer to the UNEP Ozone Secretariat (data version 2026.09).

Buyer conclusion: R22 is an HCFC-class controlled substance with ODP 0.055 and GWP 1810, currently in the global phase-out process, with supply tightening year by year and prices rising, and it can no longer be used in new equipment. Developed countries halted production and import of virgin product in 2020; China, under its National Phase-out Plan, reduces the baseline by 67.5% in 2025 and 97.5% in 2030. The EU, US and Japan all permit only reclaimed product for the maintenance of existing equipment. Recommendation: select an alternative refrigerant directly for new projects (R32, R410A, R407C, R454B or hydrocarbon R290); if existing equipment still uses R22, a retrofit should be planned in advance (noting mineral oil (not interchangeable with POE used by R407C/R410A) and system compatibility). Domestic procurement must be filed in the “Ozone-Depleting Substances Information Management System”.
