Honeywell R410A is a new environmentally friendly refrigerant that does not destroy the ozone layer and has a working pressure ofR221.6 times, high refrigeration efficiency and improve air conditioning performance. The new refrigerant R410A consists of two quasi-azeotropic mixturesR32andR125Each is composed of 50%, and is characterized by stability, non-toxicity and excellent performance. R410A is so far internationally recognized as the most suitable refrigerant to replace R22, and has been popularized in Europe, America, Japan and other countries.

As a widely used medium and high temperature refrigerant today, Juhua R410A is mainly used in household air conditioners, small and medium-sized commercial air conditioners (small and medium-sized unit air conditioners, household central air conditioners, multi-connection), mobile air conditioners, dehumidifiers, freezing dryers, marine refrigeration equipment, industrial refrigeration and other refrigeration equipment. R410A is the best and final choice to replace Freon R22 on newly installed refrigeration equipment; because R410A and R22 have different pressures (the pressure of R410A is much higher than that of R22) and the oil used for compressors are different, for after-sales maintenance of refrigeration equipment initially installed with R22 refrigerant, if more refrigerant needs to be added or replaced, R22 can still only be added. Generally, R410A cannot be directly used to replace R22 (a replacement cannot be carried out).

Compared with the R22, the R410A has a significant increase in cooling capacity, making it possible to design smaller and more compact air conditioning equipment. And because R410A has near-azeotropic physical properties, the refrigerant temperature slip is less than 0.2℃ throughout the entire operating range.

Alternatives & Matched Lubricant

Under the Kigali Amendment HFC phase-down, the following alternatives can be evaluated (R410A itself remains legal to use); the final selection must match the application, system pressure and lubricant compatibility.

Regulatory and compliance status (R410A / R410A (R32/R125 near-azeotrope))

R410A (R410A (R32/R125 near-azeotrope)) has an ODP of 0 and is not an ozone-depleting substance, and therefore is not bound by the Montreal Protocol phase-out schedule; but as a fluorinated greenhouse gas (F-gas, GWP 2088), it is controlled under the Kigali Amendment and the HFC reduction policies of major economies. The following are the regional status as of 2026, for reference in procurement and compliance decisions.

EU

  • RegulationF-gas Regulation (EU) 2024/573, in force since 2024-03-11
  • HFC quota60% in 2025–28, 30% in 2029–33, 20% in 2034–35, 15% from 2036; HFC fully phased out by 2050
  • New equipment restrictionsNew refrigeration/air-conditioning equipment with GWP>150 has been banned for sale in phases since 2022 (commercial refrigeration 2022, standalone equipment 2025, fully by 2030)
  • For R410AGWP 2088 > 150 — not permitted for new equipment of this type in the EU; servicing or top-up of existing equipment is unaffected

US

  • RegulationAmerican Innovation and Manufacturing (AIM) Act (in force since 2020-12-27)
  • TargetHFC production and consumption reduced by 85% by 2036
  • Quota cap60% in 2024–28, 30% in 2029–33, 20% in 2034–35, 15% from 2036
  • For R410ARegulated HFC, exchange value accounted by GWP 2088

China

  • RegulationKigali Amendment (entered into force for China on 2021-09-15)
  • Baseline2024 production/consumption freeze (production 18.53 billion tCO₂e, consumption 9.05 billion tCO₂e)
  • Reduction10% reduction by 2029, 30% by 2035, 50% by 2040, 80% by 2045
  • For R410AProduction and use are subject to quota management
  • Domestic procurement qualificationHFC-class refrigerants require environmental filing; see the Q&A below (system: new-ods.ozone.org.cn)

Japan

  • RegulationAct on Rational Use and Proper Management of Fluorocarbons
  • MechanismSets caps based on “weighted-average GWP” for designated products + compliance deadlines (not an all-sector ban)
  • Typical capsDomestic air conditioning ≤750 (2018), commercial air conditioning ≤750 (2020), automotive air conditioning ≤150 (2023), condensing/freezing units ≤1500 (2025), cold storage ≤100 (2019)
  • For R410AGWP 2088 exceeds condensing/refrigeration units (≤1500), residential air conditioners (≤750), commercial air conditioners (≤750), vehicle air conditioners (≤150), cold stores (≤100) — such new equipment must switch to a lower-GWP refrigerant
Other countries and regions (grouped by the Kigali Amendment)

Apart from the four columns of EU / US / China / Japan, the global 170+ Kigali parties all comply under the A5 (developing countries) / non-A5 (developed countries) groupings of the Montreal Protocol, and none impose equipment-level bans. The grouping determines the HFC reduction pace and is unrelated to geography — for example, the Middle East Gulf and India belong to A5 Group 2, while Brazil, Mexico and Chile belong to A5 Group 1 (same group as China). The table below is a quick reference for the groupings of major markets:

GroupingHFC reduction paceMajor countries / regions (representative)
A5 Group 1
(developing countries, including China)
2024 freeze → 10% reduction by 2029 → 30% by 2035 → 50% by 2040 → 80% by 2045Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Peru, Mexico, South Africa, South Korea, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, Egypt, Nigeria, etc. (about 140 countries in total)
A5 Group 2
(high-ambient-temperature group, HAT)
2028 freeze → 10% reduction by 2032 → 20% by 2037 → 30% by 2042 → 85% by 2047India, Bahrain, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates
Other non-A5
(developed countries, except EU/US/Japan)
85% reduction by 2036 / reduced to 15% by 2050Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Switzerland, Norway, United Kingdom, Russia* (first two steps delayed: 5% by 2020, 35% by 2025), etc.

For R410A: subject to quota constraints, long-term supply restricted and prices trending upward. For the complete list of Parties and groupings, refer to the UNEP Ozone Secretariat (data version 2026.09).

Buyer conclusion: R410A is still legally produced, sold and used worldwide and is not subject to a comprehensive ban; but as a fluorinated greenhouse gas (GWP 2088), its supply is constrained by national quotas and prices trend upward in the long term. In the EU, new equipment with GWP>150 has been banned in stages; GWP 2088 exceeds that threshold, so it is not permitted for such new equipment; The US and China are also progressively reducing HFCs according to their own schedules; Japan promotes substitution for domestic/commercial/automotive air conditioning based on GWP caps. Recommendation: for new projects, prioritise evaluating low-GWP alternatives (R32, R454B, R452B); existing equipment can continue to be maintained with R410A. Domestic customers must complete environmental filing (“Ozone-Depleting Substances Information Management System”) before purchasing, and suppliers must verify the filing and may not sell to individuals or enterprises not filed as required.
