In refrigeration service, system design, and teaching, it is often necessary to convert quickly between a refrigerant's saturation pressure and saturation temperature. The “Refrigerant PT Calculator” below can be used directly on this page:
Features
- 78 refrigerants: covers mainstream fluids such as R134a, R22, R32, R410A, R404A, R407C, R290 (propane), R600a, R507, R717 (ammonia), R744 (carbon dioxide), R1234yf, and includes low-GWP alternatives such as R448A, R449A, R452A, R454B, as well as legacy refrigerants like R12 and R502 and natural refrigerants like R290, R600a, and R717.
- Bidirectional conversion: drag the temperature slider to get saturation pressure, or enter pressure to derive saturation temperature.
- Multiple units: temperature °C / °F; pressure bar (absolute) / bar (gauge) / kPa / psi (gauge).
- PT curve visualization: visually shows the saturation pressure-temperature relationship of the refrigerant.
Use Cases
Refrigeration equipment charging and service, chiller and heat-pump system design, refrigeration-principle teaching demonstrations, etc. Data is obtained by linear interpolation from published saturation property tables and is for reference only; actual operation should follow on-site instrument readings.

Note: GWP is based on CO₂=1. Safety classes follow ASHRAE 34 (A/B denote toxicity, digits 1/2/3 denote flammability). Data are drawn from publicly available saturated-property tables and are for reference only; for selection and operation always follow current regulations, manufacturer data and field instrumentation.
Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
What is GWP (Global Warming Potential), and why consider it when choosing a refrigerant?
GWP compares how much heat a given mass of a greenhouse gas traps over a time horizon relative to CO₂, with CO₂=1. For example R134a has a GWP near 1300, so equal mass traps about 1300 times more heat than CO₂. Modern HVAC rules (EU F-Gas, Kigali Amendment) progressively restrict high-GWP substances, making low GWP a key compliance factor in refrigerant choice.
What do refrigerant safety classes A1 / A2L / A3 mean?
Per ASHRAE 34, the letter A/B shows toxicity (A low, B higher) and the number 1/2/3 shows flammability (1 non-flammable, 2 flammable, 3 highly flammable; 2L means lower flammability). So A1 is low-toxicity non-flammable (e.g. R134a, R410A), A2L is low-toxicity mildly flammable (e.g. R32, R1234yf), and A3 is low-toxicity highly flammable (e.g. R290 propane, R600a isobutane). Flammable refrigerants need stricter charge, ventilation and installation rules.
Can R32 and R410A be mixed or used interchangeably?
No. They differ in composition, thermodynamic properties and operating pressure (R410A is a near-azeotropic blend of R32/R125). Both use POE oil, but each system is designed for its own refrigerant, so mixing or substituting in one system is prohibited. Service and charging must use the refrigerant named on the equipment nameplate; mixing causes performance loss, abnormal pressure and safety hazards.
Why are R290 (propane) and R600a (isobutane) called natural refrigerants?
They are hydrocarbon (HC) refrigerants from naturally occurring propane and isobutane, with ODP=0 and very low GWP (R290≈3, R600a≈4), hence 'natural'. Their environmental benefit is large, but with A3 high flammability they are mainly used in small appliances (household fridges, small freezers) under strict charge limits.
Why was R22 phased out, and what are the alternatives?
R22 is an HCFC containing ozone-depleting chlorine (ODP>0) and has been phased out worldwide under the Montreal Protocol. Common transitional alternatives are HFC refrigerants such as R407C and R410A; but because HFCs generally have high GWP, new equipment is moving further to low-GWP options like R32, R454B and R290. The choice depends on equipment design and local regulations.
What does a refrigerant's normal boiling point indicate?
The normal boiling point is the temperature at which the refrigerant becomes vapor at 1 standard atmosphere. A lower boiling point means higher evaporation pressure and lower evaporation temperature under normal cooling, suiting medium/low-temperature refrigeration; higher-boiling refrigerants suit high-temperature or air-conditioning duty. Boiling point is a key parameter for pressure range, compressor selection and safety.
