R508B ultra-low temperature refrigerants (R-508B, SUVA95, Genetron 508B) are environmentally friendly azeotropic refrigerants that are completely free of CFCs and HCFC substances that destroy the ozone layer. They are recognized and recommended by most countries in the world. Mainstream ultra-low temperature environmentally friendly refrigerants are widely used for re-addition during initial installation and maintenance of new refrigeration equipment (ultra-low temperature, cryogenic). R508B is widely usedultralow temperature refrigerant, yesR13R503andR23The substitutes for, mainly used in cryogenic equipment such as environmental test chambers/equipment (cold and hot impact testers), freeze-drying machines/freeze-dryers, ultra-low temperature refrigerators or freezers, blood bank refrigerators, and biochemical test chambers (including scientific research refrigeration, Medical refrigeration, etc.), which is more common in low temperature stages used in these cascade refrigeration systems. The cooling temperature of R508B can be reduced to-80 ° C or even lower. It is a long-term replacement for R13, R503 and R23 that meet industry standards. It is fully adapted to the working environment of R503.

R508B refrigerant belongs to the PFC class and is an industrial-grade alternative to R-13 and R503 in ultra-low temperature applications [as low as-40 ° F to-150 ° F (-40 ° C to-101 ° C)], such as pharmaceutical cold storage and environmental laboratories. This product is superior to the R23, including reduced compressor discharge temperatures, and is the best choice for critical applications that ensure the most appropriate system reliability. The R508B can be used in new equipment or can be used to replace existing systems. Applications Ultra-low temperature environments [as low as-40 ° F to-150 ° F (-40 ° C to-101 ° C)]: drug cold storage; environmental laboratory. Support from many OEMs; Extended equipment life: Lower exhaust temperature than R23, extending compressor life; Improved cooling capacity: 30% higher cooling capacity than R13; is the best match for the R503 system as a direct replacement refrigerant.

Although R508B refrigerant is the most common choice to replace Freon R503 and R13 in newly installed ultra-low temperature refrigeration equipment, since R508B is different from R503 and R13 in physical and chemical properties, theoretical cycle performance, and compressor oil, for after-sales maintenance of refrigeration equipment initially installed with R503 and R13 refrigerants, if it is necessary to add or replace additional refrigerants, only R503 and R13 can be added. Usually, R508B cannot be directly used to replace R503, R13 (that is to say, replacement in the form of blood exchange is usually not possible).

R508B refrigerant components
Mole percentage: R23 accounts for 62.6751%, R116 accounts for 37.3249%

R508B matching refrigeration oil
Emkarate RL 32H, Solest LT-32, etc.; what kind of refrigeration oil is ultimately used in different equipment and different application locations should be determined in accordance with the recommendations of refrigeration compressor and refrigeration (air conditioning) equipment manufacturers, or based on the specific conditions of use of the refrigeration compressor and refrigeration equipment. Use refrigerator lubricants with the same design requirements, that is, use equivalentrefrigeration oil

Regulatory and compliance status (R508B / R508B (R23/R116 azeotrope))

R508B (R508B (R23/R116 azeotrope)) has an ODP of 0 and is not an ozone-depleting substance, and therefore is not bound by the Montreal Protocol phase-out schedule; but as a fluorinated greenhouse gas (F-gas, GWP 13400), it is controlled under the Kigali Amendment and the HFC reduction policies of major economies. The following are the regional status as of 2026, for reference in procurement and compliance decisions.

EU

  • RegulationF-gas Regulation (EU) 2024/573, in force since 2024-03-11
  • HFC quota60% in 2025–28, 30% in 2029–33, 20% in 2034–35, 15% from 2036; HFC fully phased out by 2050
  • New equipment restrictionsNew refrigeration/air-conditioning equipment with GWP>150 has been banned for sale in phases since 2022 (commercial refrigeration 2022, standalone equipment 2025, fully by 2030)
  • For R508BGWP 13400 > 150 — not permitted for new equipment of this type in the EU; servicing or top-up of existing equipment is unaffected

US

  • RegulationAmerican Innovation and Manufacturing (AIM) Act (in force since 2020-12-27)
  • TargetHFC production and consumption reduced by 85% by 2036
  • Quota cap60% in 2024–28, 30% in 2029–33, 20% in 2034–35, 15% from 2036
  • For R508BRegulated HFC, exchange value accounted by GWP 13400

China

  • RegulationKigali Amendment (entered into force for China on 2021-09-15)
  • Baseline2024 production/consumption freeze (production 18.53 billion tCO₂e, consumption 9.05 billion tCO₂e)
  • Reduction10% reduction by 2029, 30% by 2035, 50% by 2040, 80% by 2045
  • For R508BProduction and use are subject to quota management
  • Domestic procurement qualificationHFC-class refrigerants require environmental filing; see the Q&A below (system: new-ods.ozone.org.cn)

Japan

  • RegulationAct on Rational Use and Proper Management of Fluorocarbons
  • MechanismSets caps based on “weighted-average GWP” for designated products + compliance deadlines (not an all-sector ban)
  • Typical capsDomestic air conditioning ≤750 (2018), commercial air conditioning ≤750 (2020), automotive air conditioning ≤150 (2023), condensing/freezing units ≤1500 (2025), cold storage ≤100 (2019)
  • For R508BGWP 13400 exceeds condensing/refrigeration units (≤1500), residential air conditioners (≤750), commercial air conditioners (≤750), vehicle air conditioners (≤150), cold stores (≤100) — such new equipment must switch to a lower-GWP refrigerant
Other countries and regions (grouped by the Kigali Amendment)

Apart from the four columns of EU / US / China / Japan, the global 170+ Kigali parties all comply under the A5 (developing countries) / non-A5 (developed countries) groupings of the Montreal Protocol, and none impose equipment-level bans. The grouping determines the HFC reduction pace and is unrelated to geography — for example, the Middle East Gulf and India belong to A5 Group 2, while Brazil, Mexico and Chile belong to A5 Group 1 (same group as China). The table below is a quick reference for the groupings of major markets:

GroupingHFC reduction paceMajor countries / regions (representative)
A5 Group 1
(developing countries, including China)
2024 freeze → 10% reduction by 2029 → 30% by 2035 → 50% by 2040 → 80% by 2045Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Peru, Mexico, South Africa, South Korea, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, Egypt, Nigeria, etc. (about 140 countries in total)
A5 Group 2
(high-ambient-temperature group, HAT)
2028 freeze → 10% reduction by 2032 → 20% by 2037 → 30% by 2042 → 85% by 2047India, Bahrain, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates
Other non-A5
(developed countries, except EU/US/Japan)
85% reduction by 2036 / reduced to 15% by 2050Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Switzerland, Norway, United Kingdom, Russia* (first two steps delayed: 5% by 2020, 35% by 2025), etc.

For R508B: subject to quota constraints, long-term supply restricted and prices trending upward. For the complete list of Parties and groupings, refer to the UNEP Ozone Secretariat (data version 2026.09).

Buyer conclusion: R508B is still legally produced, sold and used worldwide and is not subject to a comprehensive ban; but as a fluorinated greenhouse gas (GWP 13400), its supply is constrained by national quotas and prices trend upward in the long term. In the EU, new equipment with GWP>150 has been banned in stages; GWP 13400 exceeds that threshold, so it is not permitted for such new equipment; The US and China are also progressively reducing HFCs according to their own schedules; Japan promotes substitution for domestic/commercial/automotive air conditioning based on GWP caps. Recommendation: for new projects, prioritise evaluating low-GWP alternatives (R32, R454B, R513A or a hydrocarbon refrigerant); existing equipment can continue to be maintained with R508B. Domestic customers must complete environmental filing (“Ozone-Depleting Substances Information Management System”) before purchasing, and suppliers must verify the filing and may not sell to individuals or enterprises not filed as required.
